How to put iPad into recovery mode

Put iPad into recovery mode – models with a home button
These steps apply to older iPad models with a physical Home button (pre-2018). If your device lacks a Home button, scroll down for instructions specific to newer models. Before starting the iPad recovery mode process, power off your iPad if possible.
To enter iPad recovery mode, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button simultaneously. Release only when the Apple logo appears and the recovery screen loads. Then, connect your iPad to a computer via USB to proceed with recovery.

Put iPad into recovery mode – models after 2018 with no home button
The newer model iPads (after 2018) no longer have a home button so a different series of buttons will access recovery mode.
- Turn off your iPad by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button at the top and the volume up or volume down button until you see the power-off slider.
- Slide the power-off slider to turn off.
- While holding the Sleep/Wake button at the top, connect your iPad to your computer with a USB cable.
- Keep holding until the recovery mode screen comes up.
What to do with iPad recovery mode
Once your iPad enters iPad recovery mode, you’ll have around 15 minutes before the device exits this mode automatically. If that happens, simply repeat the steps outlined earlier to re-enable iPad recovery mode. While your iPad remains connected to your computer in iPad recovery mode, you’ll be presented with two options: ‘Update’ or ‘Restore’. Start with ‘Update’ to avoid data loss. If that fails, proceed with ‘Restore’—just remember it will erase all data. After completing the process, follow the on-screen instructions to set up your device again.
